In the heart of northwestern Sweden, hiking the Preiststiken trail has become one of the most exciting and beautiful journeys in Europe. This 37-mile path starts from Kvikkjokk and reaches the old church of Alkuvar; a place built in 1788 where a special ceremony is held every summer.
A Unique Experience in Nature
On the day of the ceremony, even though I was wearing casual clothes, I took the trouble to change my underwear for the first time in several days and cleaned myself with a wet wipe. When I arrived at the church, I felt more like part of an exploratory journey than a religious congregation. Alongside others, we sat on wooden benches, and the sound of my leather boots clattering on the stony ground added to the polar wind blowing through the cracks of the stone walls.
The officiating priest, Magnus Amethrop Jacobsen, was clearly a man of knowledge and experience. Like others, he was wearing a raincoat and was ready to conduct the ceremony. As the candles danced in their brass holders and the cold wind swirled through the church, I felt that this experience was beyond a simple religious ceremony.
