Debbie Hewitt, the Chair of the Football Association (FA) and FIFA Vice-President, has requested Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, to publish all documents related to the controversial plan to allocate part of the World Cup's commercial rights to private investors. This request was made in a letter sent by Hewitt to Infantino and Matthias Grafström, the FIFA Secretary General.
Details of the Commercial Rights Allocation Plan
The plan known as FFE (Football Financial Exchange), aimed at creating a commercial company to manage the economic aspects of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, was shelved following widespread opposition within the football community. In her letter, Hewitt has called for the relevant documents to be made available to council members before the FIFA Council meeting scheduled for October 15. Lack of transparency on this issue could lead to significant concerns among council members and impact future decision-making.
Balogun's Suspension and Political Pressures
In addition to the request for transparency regarding the FFE plan, Hewitt has also called for clarification and the publication of documents related to FIFA's decision to suspend the ban on Folarin Balogun, the striker for the U.S. national team. Balogun, after receiving a red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, was supposed to miss the next match for the U.S. against Belgium as per usual protocol. However, FIFA's disciplinary committee suspended his one-match ban for a year, allowing him to continue participating in competitions.
This decision has sparked controversy, with former U.S. President Donald Trump confirming that he contacted Infantino and requested a review of Balogun's case. Although FIFA has emphasized that the final decision was made by the independent disciplinary committee of the organization, pressures on Infantino regarding this matter have increased.
As Hewitt has called for transparency on both cases, this could lead to serious consequences for Infantino ahead of his candidacy for the next term as FIFA president.
