Formula 1 has recently announced that for the first time, the Sprint Race format will be introduced at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from December 9 to 12, 2027. This event, hosted at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, provides another opportunity for thrilling competitions in this prestigious global event.
Sprint Race Format
The Sprint Race is a shorter race aimed at adding more competition to the regular Grand Prix schedule. In this format, the Sprint Race takes place on Saturday, and a qualifying session is held on Friday to determine the drivers' positions for the race. The qualifying session for the main race occurs on Saturday before the main race on Sunday.

Notably, drivers in the Sprint Race earn points based on their final positions, which are added to the drivers' championship standings for the season. Since the introduction of this format in 2021, Sprint Races have only been held at a few circuits, but this format also has a history in younger competitions like Formula 2.
Event Details and Regulations
The Sprint Race is approximately held over a distance of 100 kilometers, and there are no mandatory pit stops during this race. Any driver who enters the pit will be disqualified from the race. The qualifying session is divided into three parts, with SQ1 lasting 12 minutes, SQ2 lasting 10 minutes, and SQ3 lasting only 8 minutes. The main difference between the Sprint qualifying session and the full qualifying session is that drivers are not allowed to change tires during the Sprint session.
In SQ1 and SQ2, the use of medium tires is mandatory, and in SQ3, the use of soft tires, whether new or old, is required. The scoring system for the Sprint Race is as follows: the first place earns 8 points, the second place earns 7 points, the third place earns 6 points, and so on, down to eighth place, which earns 1 point.
