The 2026 Asian Games will take place in Japan from September 19 to October 4, featuring over 10,000 athletes competing in 43 different sports. India, as the champion of the last two editions of the Asian Games in cricket, will enter this competition aiming to defend its gold medals. The Indian team includes stars like Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson and is fully prepared for these games.

Competing Teams and Challenges

The number of teams participating in cricket at these games is limited, but India will face serious challenges from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. These four teams have directly qualified for the quarter-finals, while other teams will be determined through preliminary matches. If India and Pakistan win in the quarter-finals, they may meet in the semi-finals.

Team Composition and Match Schedule

The Indian team composition includes Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Jasprit Bumrah. On the other hand, Pakistan will also field a complete team led by Sahibzada Farhan. However, some stars of this team, such as Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi, will be absent in this edition, and young players like Syed Ayub and Ali Raza will compete.

The competition schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, September 24: Japan vs Afghanistan (4 AM UAE time)
  • Friday, September 25: Hong Kong vs Oman (4 AM)
  • Monday, September 28: Quarter-finals: Pakistan vs TBD (4 AM)
  • Tuesday, September 29: Quarter-finals: Sri Lanka vs TBD (4 AM)
  • Saturday, October 3: Final match for the gold medal (9 AM)

Concerns exist regarding the logistical challenges of holding T20 matches in these games, but temporary measures have been taken to address these issues. India will also hold a historic T20 international match against Japan on September 22, marking the first time this country faces a full ICC member.
