The 2023 Asian Games (Aichi-Nagoya) will take place in Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. This major sporting event, which marks the third edition of the Asian Games in Japan, is an opportunity to restore lost sports experiences due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the first edition since the Asian Games were held in Hiroshima in 1994.
High Number of Participants and Diversity of Sports
According to plans, 15,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries and regions are expected to participate in these competitions, but with approximately 17,000 registrations currently, the response to this event has exceeded initial expectations. This increase is due to the addition of new sports to the competitions. While the Paris Olympic Games included 329 medal events across 32 sports, the Nagoya Games will offer 469 medal events across 43 sports.

Challenges of Hosting and Attracting Public Attention
The hosts of these games have faced challenges including adverse weather conditions. Heavy rainfall in recent weeks has led to the temporary evacuation of hundreds of athletes and officials from their accommodations. Additionally, some competition venues have faced issues such as water leaks. At the same time, there are tensions between local plans for hosting a simple event and the larger plans of the Olympic Council of Asia.
Japan, considering its recent successes at the Paris Olympics with 20 gold medals, hopes to increase public enthusiasm by winning more medals at these games. Sports stars like Haruka Kitaguchi, a javelin thrower, and Shinnosuke Oka, an Olympic triathlon champion, will be striving for gold medals.
