Amazon Prime Video is negotiating with the Television Academy for the broadcast rights to the Emmy Awards. This agreement could lead to fundamental changes in how one of the biggest television award ceremonies is broadcast and could, for the first time, take the Emmy Awards off traditional television.
Details of the Negotiations
The Television Academy has confirmed that discussions regarding the future of this ceremony are ongoing, but no agreement has been announced yet. A spokesperson for the Academy stated: "We are in talks, and when we have something to announce, we will do so." These negotiations are taking place as the Academy's last agreement with ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC has expired, and the 2026 ceremony will be the last held under this agreement.

Possible Implications for Award Broadcasts
NBC broadcast the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14, and the ceremony was also streamed on the Peacock platform. If an agreement is signed with Amazon, this may be the last Emmy ceremony to be broadcast under the old rotating system. Amazon Prime Video has had successful experiences in live broadcasting award shows and has been streaming the Country Music Academy Awards live since 2022.
This change is also in line with overall shifts in how access to major award ceremonies is being handled. The Oscars are set to move to YouTube in 2029, and the SAG Awards, which have now been renamed The Actor Awards, have moved to Netflix.
The Emmy Awards have utilized a network rotation system for decades, and the current four-network system has been in place since the mid-1990s, following the end of previous exclusive agreements with Fox and ABC. Details regarding the potential financial aspects of the Amazon agreement have not yet been disclosed, and it is unclear how long the agreement will last.
Currently, Amazon Prime Video is being recognized as a potential new home for the Emmy Awards, and the Television Academy has not yet announced where the 2027 Emmy Awards will be broadcast.
