Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged with great promises in enhancing productivity and bringing fundamental changes to the labor market. However, the existing realities in the Middle East, particularly in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, indicate that this technology has not yet significantly impacted job numbers. In this regard, recent statistics reveal insufficient productivity gains and the challenges of integrating this technology into work processes.

Productivity Statistics and Economic Realities

In the second quarter of this year, statistics show that labor productivity in the United States has only increased by 1.4 percent compared to last year. Meanwhile, in the previous quarter, this figure reached 0.3 percent, both significantly lower than the long-term average of 2.1 percent. These statistics indicate that while new technologies like artificial intelligence are emerging, their impact on the economy and productivity is not yet clearly evident.

Impacts of Artificial Intelligence on Jobs and the Labor Market

While some companies report productivity increases in specific areas such as software development, evidence suggests that this increase is not visible at the macroeconomic level. For instance, AI tools like Codex and GitHub Copilot assist developers in producing code faster, but there is still a need for reviewing and testing this code. This indicates that while some tasks may be completed more quickly, macroeconomic processes still require fundamental changes.

Leaders of AI companies had predicted that this technology would rapidly boost GDP, but reality shows that changes take time. According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, "The economy is very slow, and changes happen gradually." This suggests that even with advanced technologies, societal and economic adaptation requires time.

Many business leaders in the UAE and Saudi Arabia point out that while AI may eliminate some jobs, it simultaneously creates new opportunities. This trend is similar to every other new technology that has occurred in history. While some jobs are threatened by the advancement of AI, new jobs are also created as a result of these changes.

It seems that currently, AI is more often used as an excuse for workforce adjustments in some companies rather than as a real tool for enhancing productivity. This situation necessitates more careful analysis of the actual impacts of this technology on the labor market.
