The average price of diesel in the United States has reached a record $6.2694 per gallon. This price increase has occurred due to supply constraints resulting from the war in the Middle East and Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries. While this situation has put considerable pressure on Donald Trump, the President of the United States, ahead of the midterm congressional elections, analysts believe that the diesel and fuel oil market remains highly imbalanced.

Factors Affecting Diesel Prices

Energy market analysts, including Arne Lohmann Rasmussen, head of analysis at Global Risk Management, pointed out that "diesel and fuel oil markets are under significant pressure." According to him, a halt to Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries could help balance the diesel market, but the shortage of refined products from the Middle East has a greater impact on this situation. Rasmussen also noted the increase in diesel and fuel oil prices following the onset of the war with Iran, stating that "the price range between crude oil and refined products has significantly widened."

Economic Consequences

Historically, the price of diesel has increased from $3.7577 per gallon before the start of the war between the U.S. and Iran to over $6 last Friday. This price reached a record $5.8159 per gallon in June 2022, just a few months after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. This price increase could have significant economic consequences, especially in the transportation, agriculture, and construction sectors, which are heavily reliant on diesel fuel.

Overall, given this upward trend in diesel prices, it is expected that the government and policymakers will face new challenges in controlling inflation and the economic impacts of high fuel prices. In this context, managing energy markets and adopting appropriate measures to improve supply and demand conditions is of utmost importance.
