A military court in Syria on Thursday, following a trial related to sectarian violence on the coast of the country, sentenced one defendant to death and two others to 25 and 20 years in prison. These sentences are part of a legal case that began in November of last year and is linked to massacres that occurred in March 2025.
Details of the Trial and Sentences Issued
This military court, in addition to the aforementioned convictions, acquitted another defendant. The trial followed an investigation into bloody events that led to the deaths of hundreds of members of the Alawite minority. Reports indicate that this violence began after attacks by forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad, the former president of Syria, on military and security centers in March 2025. These attacks, which took place on March 6, resulted in the deaths of 238 military personnel.

Analysis of the Situation and Social Consequences
The National Commission for Inquiry and Truth-Seeking in Syria, in a report published in July 2025, examined human rights violations and violence against civilians in the days following these attacks. The commission concluded that these violations were carried out by individuals and small groups with various objectives, and not as part of a systematic pattern. This violence is considered one of the worst bloodlettings in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024.
Reports also indicate that a total of 1,426 people lost their lives in this violence, including in attacks on security forces and mass killings of Alawites. UN investigations in August of last year suggest that war crimes were likely committed by temporary government forces and fighters loyal to the former Syrian regime.
