The U.S. has denied a visa for Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, to enter the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week. This decision was made due to the failure of members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and officials of the Palestinian Authority (PA) to meet their commitments, particularly regarding reforms.
Reasons for Visa Denial
The U.S. Department of State, in a statement that did not mention Abbas by name, announced that the visa denial is due to activities that appear to undermine the prospects for peace. This includes actions in international organizations that contradict their previous commitments.

The statement also referenced actions aimed at internationalizing the Israel-Palestine conflict and efforts to circumvent negotiations through attempts at unilateral recognition. Additionally, the provision of aid to terrorists and the glorification of terrorist acts were cited as weaknesses of the Palestinian Authority.
International Consequences
This U.S. action has faced opposition from many countries, including France, which addressed the recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations last year. Following these developments, 142 UN member countries have supported this recognition. It seems this U.S. stance is part of a broader policy to maintain pressure on the Palestinian Authority.
The increase in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank has also exacerbated existing tensions. Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to the outbreak of war in Gaza, violence has surged significantly. According to Palestinian health ministry statistics, at least 1,109 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers or settlers since then.
Meanwhile, Israeli military attacks on Gaza have resulted in over 73,700 deaths. This situation has raised deep concerns within the international community, but the U.S. has remained silent on this issue, only opposing any annexation of Palestinian territories.
