Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Wednesday described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as "extremely disastrous" and emphasized the need for accountability from countries that supply weapons to the warring parties in this conflict. He stated that the warring parties in Sudan bear responsibility for this conflict, but the role of foreign powers is also significant.
Humanitarian Situation and International Responsibilities
Guterres said: "The situation unfolding in Sudan is extremely disastrous. The level of suffering among the people of Sudan is unbearable." He added that countries must be held accountable for the type of intervention that leads to the provision of weapons to the warring parties and results in attacks on civilians. Some countries have been accused of supporting one side of the civil war in Sudan. In this context, the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly denied allegations of supporting the Rapid Support Forces.

Transition to Civilian Government
Massad Bolus, senior advisor to the President of the United States, stated that there is no role for the two generals involved in the war in Sudan in the country's political future. He emphasized the need for a swift transition to civilian governance and said: "We only support this path." Bolus clarified that President Trump has been very clear about Sudan and that addressing the humanitarian crisis is a priority for the United States.
Guterres also warned about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence and called for the establishment of international frameworks for the safety of this technology. He stated that governments have a responsibility to protect their citizens from potential threats posed by artificial intelligence and that national measures alone will not be sufficient. He added: "Artificial intelligence knows no borders, and its threats do not either."
According to Guterres, artificial intelligence will be a key topic in his meetings with world leaders next week, and he acknowledged that geopolitical divisions could complicate efforts to establish common regulations. He emphasized: "The world cannot move towards reducing the safety of artificial intelligence. We need frameworks that build trust and make artificial intelligence safe, transparent, and accountable, with human dignity at its core."
Guterres also expressed concern about the situation in Palestine, referring to the ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza and the increase in violence and settlement activities in the West Bank. He stated that Israel does not accept the current peace plan while civilians in Gaza face serious threats.
