Abu Dhabi companies, including the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, Dubai Investments, and Mubadala Capital, represented the United Arab Emirates and announced plans to invest up to $50 billion in Canada. A notable absence from the summit was the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which has assets close to $1 trillion.
Details of Investment Projects
The summit showcased projects worth several billion dollars, including cloud facilities, advanced manufacturing, liquefied natural gas, ports, and several mining sites. Carney met throughout the day with key investment representatives such as Fink, Gray, and managers from Qatar and Kuwait's investment sectors.
Carney introduced Canada as a relatively safe place for investment in an unstable world and also pointed out internal challenges. He stated on Monday, "We have been slow in terms of regulatory approvals and other factors." He also mentioned that the government took steps last year to expedite approvals and added, "We intend to place greater emphasis on this strategy and will announce actions in this regard in the coming weeks."
The goal of the summit is very ambitious: to attract up to $1 trillion in public and private investment over the next five years. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the Public Investment Board collaborated in organizing this summit.
